Guide to applications for the posts of specially appointed faculty members in the “Initiative to Develop the New Generation of Leaders at the University of Tsukuba 

he University of Tsukuba implements the above-titled program for 5 years from 2007 (URL: http://www.md.tsukuba.ac.jp/basic-med/news/initiative.html). 15 excellent young researchers are sought internationally in the area of basic medical sciences, basic biology, applied biochemistry and physics. 1. Position: Independent specially appointed assistant professor or specially appointed associate professor (tenure-track position).

3. Starting date: as soon as possible after appointment

4. Term of appointment: Until March 31, 2012

5. Terms of employment:
 ○ The terms of employment are the same as those for University of Tsukuba faculty.
 ○ Start-up funds of about \ 4 million as well as designated annual research funds (including technicians’pay) of about \ 7 million provided. Incentive compensation provided dependent on midterm evaluation. Independent research space as well as use of shared research resources. Experience in teaching graduate and undergraduate students gained under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
 ○ At the end of the term of appointment, candidates who satisfy the criteria for promotion and tenure will be promoted to tenured positions as associate professor or full professor.

6. Eligibility for application: Applicants should hold a recent (within the last 10 years), or anticipated, Ph.D.

 ○ Reprints, copies, or PDF files of 5 major publications
 ○ Competitive research funding obtained thus far
 ○ A summary of research accomplishments (1 A4 page)
 ○ An outline of future research plans (1 to 2 A4 pages)
 ○ A statement of teaching goals at the undergraduate and graduate levels (1 A4 page)
 ○ The names and contact information (including email addresses) of 2 referees.

8. Selection Process:
Two-stage examination implemented by the Examination Advisory Section of the Committee to Promote Young Researchers.

   1st stage: Review of documentation
   2nd stage: Interview examination (presentation delivered in English)
